Films about filmmaking are everywhere. Whether in behind the scenes documentaries or fictional explorations of the set, many movies have tackled the issues of making the movies themselves. Here are 7 of the best movies that tackle the chaos, the struggle, and the hardships of filmmaking.
1. American Movie
In a course simply titled, "The Movie Business," my professor in college showed this documentary which tells the story of a young man looking to make a horror film. It teeters between sad, funny, confusing, and ridiculous, but by the end you can't help but root for the guy who just wants to print his story onto celluloid -- no matter how awful the movie seems to be.
2. Lost in La Mancha
This documentary is legendary among filmmakers. It is the prime example of "everything that can go wrong, will" even to an experienced director like Terry Gilliam. Production descends into chaos as Gilliam spends the entire doc just trying to manage the logistical nightmares that haunt him at every corner. A must see for those who have ever had a bad day on set.
3. Hearts of Darkness - A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
When Francis Ford Coppola disappeared into the jungle to make Apocalypse Now, after awhile no one knew if he was ever going to come back. Luckily he did (with a bold film) and his wife chronicled the searing heat and scorching tempers. The best movies about movies are these documentaries where everything goes to Hell.
